Over the next year, Valencia Water Company (Valencia) will be operating a Groundwater Softening Demonstration Project (GWSDP), offering pre-softened water to Copperhill residents. This project has three main goals:
  1. Determine consumer attitudes toward pre-softened water
  2. Establish cost estimates and overall cost savings to consumers
  3. Quantify chloride (salt) reduction in wastewater
Valencia’s target community for the GWSDP is Copperhill. Click here to see a map of the location. This community was chosen for three reasons:
  1. The community will continue to receive the same water supply, only softer.
  2. The community was built during the short period automatic water softeners were allowed to be installed in the Santa Clarita Valley. Automatic water softeners discharge chloride into the waste stream and ultimately into the Santa Clara River.
  3. The water supply well is easily accessible and has sufficient area to allow for installation of the softening equipment.
Residents of this community should disconnect or shut off their water softeners during this project in order to assess the improved water quality. We will be contacting the residents of Copperhill to provide additional details.
